Many a patient who suffered from mesh implant complication needed to undergo surgery. In the attempts to have the mesh implant disaster corrected, the suffering doesn’t end after one surgery. Ever so often, one has to go under the knife to completely be free from a mesh nightmare.
In an interview, a woman who had a mesh implantation emphasized that the suffering did not end with the complications as she had to go through the stress and trauma of having to go through one surgery after another.
It should be noted that even if a surgery is done in a sterile environment and through strict protocols of sterility, there is still a significant level or risk involved. Some of these are severe bleeding and postoperative infection.
Revision Surgery, Revision of a Disaster
About 10 percent of all patients who had a transvaginal mesh implant needed to have a revision surgery. This is done to fix a botched mesh implantation procedure and to correct it from its original condition. And, depending on the severity of damage caused by the implant to the surrounding organs, repeat surgeries may be required.
Complete removal of the mesh in not always possible in some cases, even after several surgeries.
Surgery Patients’ Post-Mesh Life
After the revision surgeries, the original problems of stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse may come back. This may be because the muscles and organs in the pelvis have been weakened even further due to the permanent damage done by the mesh.
Continued and regular visits to the doctor and alternative treatments may be advised. Post stress counseling may also be needed for those patients whose lives have been greatly affected by the adversity. These frequent visits to medical professionals can take its toll on the patients’ and their families’ finite bank accounts as these may cost a fortune.
Lawsuits: Verdicts and Settlements Help Patients Get Across
Expensive medical bills can be unnerving. Revision surgeries can cost a lot, not to mention the several physician’s consultations needed to be done. Lawsuits have been filed against mesh manufacturers by patients who stated that they have failed to effectively inform and warn their doctors about the severe complications brought about by mesh implants.
Verdicts have been placed in favor of plaintiffs who have filed lawsuits and provided sufficient evidence from their medical records to prove their claims. Just compensations for the plaintiffs have been required by courts from manufacturers to cover for damages. These included payments for medical treatments and surgeries. In other cases, manufacturers chose to settle out of court, offering to cover medical care and other damages.
A mesh implant disaster can leave permanent scars in a woman’s life even beyond treatment. Should there be a need to seek professional help medically and legally, never hesitate to do so. A battle is best fought when you have people you can count on for support and a disaster is best faced when you draw strength from people you love.
